Q. As a parent I am stressed out about the new subject of “sexting.” We just gave my 10 year old a cell phone. Should I be concerned?

sextingA. A cell phone can definitely create a whole new set of problems and stress. A common usage of a phone is to take funny photos of friends. Sleepovers can become a photo opportunity. This could include taking photos of a friends private parts or someone in a compromising situation. If you child is mature enough to have a phone then they need to know about the potential problems a phone can create.
Children and teens need boundaries. If you hand your child a phone then take the time to hand them the rules. Clear boundaries help keep stress levels down. Let them know that is it is never funny to let someone take an inappropriate photo of them. Let them know not to let anyone else use their phone to take pictures.  A great mantra is; they are called private parts not sharing parts! Practice saying no.

It is never too early to teach your children self-worth. Introduce them to affirmations early in life. Start today!  I like myself, I listen to myself, I am valuable, I do what is right. I am a good person.
